1. Introduction

Clarity is a mental-health self-help application designed to support stress management, anxiety awareness, mood tracking, journaling, cognitive-behavioral (CBT) skills, and personal reflection. Because the App may involve sensitive emotional and mental-health-related content, we treat privacy and data minimization as core product principles.

No Clarity account is required. By default, your journals, mood logs, and most activity data are stored on your device. Networked features—such as AI-assisted journaling and chat—send only the minimum text needed to provide those features.

Clarity is not a medical device, clinical service, or substitute for professional mental-health care, diagnosis, or treatment. AI outputs are for self-reflection and education only.

2. Information We Collect

Depending on how you use the App, the following categories of information may be created and stored:

2.1 Information you provide in the App

  • Mood and check-in data — mood scores, selected emotions, activity tags, and optional notes.
  • Journal content — guided journal entries, AI-guided journal answers, free-text reflections, and drafts.
  • AI chat content — messages you send in AI chat sessions and related session summaries.
  • CBT and self-help activity — cognitive reframe exercises, assessment responses, program progress, breathwork and audio usage, badges, favorites, and daily plan completion.
  • Goals and preferences — selected wellness goals, language settings, reminder preferences, optional app-lock setting, and optional backup preference.
  • Feedback — if you contact us, the content of your message and any information you choose to include.

2.2 Information collected automatically on your device

  • App and device context for support — when you send feedback, we may include app version, operating system version, device model, and language to help us troubleshoot (as described in the in-app feedback flow).
  • Local identifiers — a locally generated user identifier stored on your device to associate your data within the App (not a cross-app advertising ID).
  • Subscription status — whether Pro features are active, product identifier, and entitlement expiry information verified through the store.
  • Widget summary data — streak count, daily plan progress, and a short affirmation text shared between the App and the Clarity home-screen widget via Apple App Group or the Android equivalent.

2.3 Information we do not collect

  • We do not require you to create a Clarity username, password, or social login.
  • We do not collect payment card numbers or full payment credentials. Purchases are processed by Apple or Google.
  • We do not use third-party advertising SDKs or sell your data for advertising purposes.
  • We do not knowingly collect precise geolocation for tracking purposes.

3. How We Use Information

We use information solely to operate and improve the App, including to:

  • Save and display your journals, check-ins, chats, programs, and progress on your device.
  • Provide AI-guided journal prompts, journal reflection analysis, AI chat replies, chat summaries, and CBT-related suggestions when you choose to use those features.
  • Manage optional local reminders and home-screen widget content.
  • Verify and deliver Pro subscription entitlements through Apple App Store or Google Play.
  • Perform optional backup and restore when you explicitly enable backup.
  • Respond to support and feedback requests.
  • Maintain security, prevent abuse, and comply with applicable law.

We do not use your journal, mood, or chat content to train our own advertising profiles or to sell data to data brokers.

4. On-Device Storage and Optional Backup

4.1 Default: data stays on your device

Unless you turn on optional backup or use networked AI features, your journal entries, mood logs, chats, and most other App data are stored locally on your phone or tablet using on-device storage mechanisms (for example, encrypted device storage provided by the operating system).

4.2 Optional iCloud backup (Apple)

If you are signed into Apple iCloud and enable optional backup in Settings, the App may store a JSON snapshot of your Clarity data in your personal iCloud container associated with your Apple ID. Backup is off by default. You can disable backup, restore from backup, or delete the cloud copy from within the App. This backup is tied to your Apple account infrastructure; we do not operate a separate Clarity cloud account for you.

4.3 Optional cloud backup (Google / other platforms)

If Clarity offers optional backup on Android or other platforms, comparable backup will only occur after you explicitly enable it, and the scope will be explained in the App before activation.

5. AI Features and Third-Party Processing

When you use AI journal prompts, AI journal reflection, AI chat, chat summaries, or AI-assisted cognitive reframe suggestions, the App sends your relevant text input—and limited context such as language preference or recent chat messages needed to produce a response—to our secure server proxy hosted on Vercel. Our proxy forwards the request to a third-party AI provider, currently DeepSeek, to generate the response.

  • We send only what is necessary to perform the feature you requested.
  • API keys for the AI provider are stored on our server environment, not in the App.
  • If the network or AI service is unavailable, the App may fall back to on-device templates so you can continue journaling without sending data.
  • AI output is for self-reflection and educational support. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or crisis intervention.

Third-party providers process data according to their own terms and privacy policies. We select providers and configure our proxy to minimize data exposure and to avoid sending unnecessary identifiers with AI requests. We do not instruct AI providers to use your content for Clarity advertising.

6. Subscriptions and Payments

Clarity offers an optional Pro subscription that unlocks additional content and features (for example, extended AI usage, guided journals, assessments, programs, and advanced insights).

  • Apple App Store — payments, renewals, refunds, and subscription management are handled by Apple under your Apple ID. We receive subscription status and product identifiers to unlock Pro features, not your full payment card details.
  • Google Play — if you purchase through Google Play, payments and subscription management are handled by Google under your Google account. We receive entitlement information needed to unlock Pro features.

You can restore purchases and manage subscriptions through the App’s Settings or through your Apple ID / Google Play account settings, as applicable.

7. Device Permissions

7.1 Notifications

If you enable reminders, the App schedules local notifications on your device (for example, morning check-in or evening reflection). Notification content is generated on your device. We do not operate a remote push-notification marketing system for Clarity.

7.2 Biometrics and app lock

If you enable app lock, the App uses your device’s biometric authentication (Face ID, Touch ID, or device passcode) through the operating system’s secure APIs. Biometric data is not stored by Clarity; it is processed locally by your device to unlock the App.

7.3 Home-screen widget

If you add the Clarity widget, a small summary (such as streak, daily plan progress, and affirmation text) is shared between the App and the widget using platform storage (for example, Apple App Group). This data remains on your device.

8. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information. We do not sell, rent, or trade your journals, mood records, chats, or mental-health-related content for advertising or data-broker purposes.

We may share information only in these limited circumstances:

  • Service providers — infrastructure and AI processing partners (such as Vercel and DeepSeek) that help us deliver AI features, subject to contractual and technical safeguards.
  • Platform providers — Apple and Google for payment, subscription verification, and optional platform backup services you choose to use.
  • Legal and safety — if required by law, regulation, legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of users or others.
  • Business transfers — in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, with notice as required by law.

9. Data Retention

  • On-device data — retained until you delete it in the App or uninstall the App.
  • Optional cloud backup — retained until you delete the backup or disable backup, subject to your Apple or Google account settings.
  • AI processing — text sent for AI features is processed to generate a response. Our server proxy is designed to handle requests transiently and not to build a permanent Clarity profile from AI traffic. Third-party AI providers may retain data according to their policies; we configure requests to minimize unnecessary retention where possible.
  • Support correspondence — retained as long as needed to resolve your inquiry and meet legal obligations.

10. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect your information, including on-device storage, encrypted transport (HTTPS) for network requests, server-side protection of API credentials, and optional device-level app lock.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. Please use a device passcode, enable app lock if desired, and avoid placing highly sensitive identifying information in journals or chats unless necessary.

11. Your Choices and Rights

Depending on your region, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict certain processing of your personal information. Within the App you can:

  • Export your data — export a copy of your Clarity data or a growth summary from Settings → Privacy & Backup.
  • Delete on-device data — delete local Clarity data from Settings (with confirmation). Language preferences may be preserved.
  • Delete cloud backup — delete optional iCloud or platform backup copies from Settings.
  • Turn off backup — disable optional backup at any time.
  • Limit AI processing — avoid AI journal and AI chat features if you do not want text sent to our servers and AI providers. Local journaling and non-AI features remain available.
  • Manage subscriptions — through Apple App Store or Google Play account settings.
  • Control notifications — through App settings and your device notification settings.

To exercise rights not available in the App, contact us at the email below. We may need to verify your request as permitted by law.

If you are in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or California, you may have additional rights under GDPR, UK GDPR, or CCPA/CPRA, including the right to object to certain processing and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

12. Children’s Privacy

Clarity is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum digital consent age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children without appropriate parental consent. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact us and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

13. International Users

If you use the App from outside the country where our servers are located, your information may be processed in countries that may have different data-protection laws than your country. When we transfer data internationally, we take steps designed to ensure appropriate safeguards consistent with applicable law.

14. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the App, legal requirements, or our practices. When we make material changes, we will provide notice within the App or by other appropriate means. Your continued use of the App after the effective date of an updated policy constitutes acceptance of the revised policy, unless otherwise required by law.
